AusHEAL Congo Project

Welcome  to the blog site of  AusHEAL, a charitable organisation, established to support healthcare in the developing world through its four pillars of Health, Education, Advocacy & Logistics. Our distinctive is to support tertiary hospitals by providing teaching, training, resources and support, thereby empowering the hospital to meet their local and wider communities' needs.

AusHEAL’s first major project is the HEAL Africa Hospital http://www.healafrica.org in Goma, on the eastern border of the Democratic Republic of Congo.  Our work has originated from medical personnel & support teams travelling to DRCongo since 2003. Relationships have been built with the HEAL Africa Hospital staff and Board.  Medical care has been enhanced through mentoring, training and surgeries undertaken. Infrastructure improved through administration development and support, installation of IT, optical networking and telephone installation, and,  finally radiological / pathological lab expansion through strategic partnership.

HEAL Africa Hospital is the only hospital in eastern DRCongo with national accreditation.  One of 3 in the nation. It serves as a base in the town of Goma in North Kivu, sandwiched between the northern end of Lake Kivu and the active volcano Mt Nyiragongo. DRCongo, a country of more than 60 million people, is amongst the 5 poorest countries globally. It suffers from poor infrastructure, poor life expectancy, high health needs and is restrained by constant  guerrilla warfare, particularly in the North Kivu province north of Goma.
